Lara is a 1929 Shermann Hoyt design built at the famous Nevins yard on City Island, New York. Lara sailed the East Coast of United States until late 1970’s, until sold to Toronto, Canada, where she was actively raced from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. In 1993 Lara was acquired to Helsinki, Finland, where she has continued racing. Lara has had extensive work done over the years, including a new deck and cockpit, renewal of the underwater planks and interior. In 2020 Lara had a 18hp Yanmar diesel engine installed to make manoevring to port and short-handed easier.


Lara has beautiful lines and is magically fast especially downwind. Her hull is mahogany on oak frames with a teak deck. In the Worlds Lara races in the SIRA class, which is the largest sub-class.

She has an aluminium mast and North Sales kevlar sails (incl. main, no 1, no 2 and no 3 and spinnakers). The running rigging and trims have been designed so that she is also easy to sail short-handed. The interior is stylish and has been fitted with four bunks, galley, chemical toilet and two removable mahogany caskets for cruising gear, which are left ashore during racing.

8mR LARA FIN-10


America’s Cup kipparin Sherman Hoytin suunnittelema Lara on rakennettu vuonna 1929 kuuluisalla Nevisin telakalla New Yorkissa. Lara purjehti vuoteen 1993 asti Yhdysvaltain itärannikolla ja Toronton Royal Canadian Yacht Clubilla, kunnes se tuotiin Suomeen. Laraan on tehty vuosien varrella lukuisia kunnostustöitä, kuten uusittu teak-kansi, istuinlaatikko ja sisätilat ja pohjalautojen vaihto. Vuonna 2020 Laraan asennettiin 18hp Yanmar diesel-moottori auttamaan veneen käsittelyssä, joka on mahdollistanut pienellä miehistöllä purjehtimisen. Laran runko on rakennettu mahongista tammikaarien päälle. Rakennusvaiheessa on käytetty pronssiruuveja rautaisten sijaan, jonka ansioista alkuperäiset kaaret ovat edelleen hyvässä kunnossa.


Lara on nopea vene ja menestynyt hyvin kilpailuissa. Larassa on North Sails:in kevlar-purjeet, spinaakkereita ja varapurjeita. Vaikka Lara on suunniteltu ensisijaisesti kilpakäyttöön, se toimii myös hyvin matkaveneenä. Veneessä on neljä punkkaa, pentteri ja kemikaali wc. Lisäksi istuinkaukalossa on irrotettavat mahonkiset arkut tavaroiden säilytystä ja istumista varten sekä mahonkinen pöytä.
